Whether you’re a diving fanatic or snorkelling newbie, there’s plenty of beautiful sea life to be spotted on a trip to the Canary Islands.
Given the Canaries’ unique location off the coast of Africa and in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the islands of Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are teeming with colourful coral and friendly fish.
Here are 10 creatures to look out for on your Canary Island holiday.
1. Parrotfish
Parrotfish is one of the most common fish you’ll find in the Canaries and can be easily spotted in the shallow coastal waters, especially in the summer months. The females are by far the most beautiful, coloured vibrant shades of red, yellow and blue. Parrotfish is also a local delicacy – look out for ‘vieja’ on the menu – it’s absolutely delicious!
2. Barracuda
Barracudas are known for swimming in large schools, darting across the currents to form incredible shapes. They’re actually the most common predator in Fuerteventura, however they never attack humans. You’ll mostly find them in harbours and by steep cliffs.
3. Damsel Fish
The Damsel Fish is a definite favourite amongst snorkelers – they’re very friendly fish who have been known to even eat out of the hand of divers. Thanks to their electric blue colour, they’re easy to spot even on cloudy days.
4. Peacock Wrasse
Often swimming with Damsel Fish, the bright Peacock Wrasse is one prettiest fish you’ll find in the waters around the Canaries. They’re extremely common – look for them everywhere but pure sand bottom reefs.
5. Manta Rays
At night, Manta Rays are known to feed in the harbours, and can often be seen by torchlight. Divers are most likely to spot them from September until November – they also like to swim around the ship wrecks and reefs in Gran Canaria.
6. Triplefin
The tiny Triplefin likes to swim in pairs in shallow waters. Despite being small, they can nip your fingers if you get too close during breeding season. Cute, nonetheless!
7. Glasseye
A very bizarre fish, the aptly named Glasseye is a strange sight. They’re nocturnal, but lucky divers can find them hiding in caves and cracks in the harbour. They’re known for their bright red colour and huge round eyes.
8. Scorpionfish
One to watch out for! The spiky scorpionfish is an expert at camouflage and has large poisonous spines. Believe it or not, they’re actually a very tasty dish!
9. Seahorse
Always a popular photo op, the seahorse is a real find in the waters around Tenerife. Keep your eyes peeled if you’re hoping to spot one of these tiny creatures – they’re extremely small and very shy but believe us, they’re down there somewhere!
10. Short-Finned Pilot Whale
If you’re after something a little larger, you can also find Short-Finned Pilot Whales off the coast of Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. They’re present all year round – book a dolphin and whale watching cruise to try your luck!
