History buffs and amateur explorers will enjoy the fact that Sir Walter Raleigh, an aristocrat, spy, adventurer and all around Renaissance man, began many of his journeys from the Exmouth harbour.

You want a salty breeze, a beach and numerous restaurants and pubs, and Exmouth, in East Devon, meets all of those requirements.

1. Boat Trip
Follow in Sir Walter Raleigh’s footsteps and take a boat trip. Stuart Line is the boating company in Exmouth. It offers a variety of different cruise options. Whether you want to take a quick jaunt down the River Exe or a 3-hour day trip to Torquay or Brixham, everything can be planned and arranged from the Exmouth marina.
2. Exe Estuary Trail
Perhaps you would rather stay on dry land. You can either walk or cycle the Exe Estuary Trail, either way it’s still a very scenic trail. This scenic path runs between Exmouth and Dawlish. If you came to Exmouth without a bicycle, then you can rent one at the Exmouth Cycle Hire, which is located on Victoria Road.
3. Beaches
Be sure to visit the beach. Exmouth’s beach and seafront is spectacular in the summertime. The kids can play in the sand, and you can sip a pint at one of the pubs along the promenade.
4. Beacon Hill
Walk up Beacon Hill for a stunning, panoramic view of Exmouth. You will not only have a stellar view of the clock tower in the centre of town, but will also be able to see the estuary.
5. Jurassic Coast
Orcombe Point, in Exmouth, is where the Jurassic Coast begins. The Jurassic Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is ninety-five miles of coastline where you can see the many stages of the earth’s geological formation. In other words, pack a rucksack and put on your hiking boots. It is amazing to explore, and if you have a day free, you can travel all the way to see the impressive Durdle Door and also combine a trip with exploring Bournemouth.
