Another place that you will not want to miss when in the capital of Mauritius, Port Louis, is the Caudan Waterfront.

This is a shopping center that is located near the sea thus providing you with a spectacular view on the harbour. The scenery can be best admired during the night so do not miss this place if you are seeking some nightlife in Port Louis.

Actually this is almost the only place where you can get some animation during the night when vising Port Louis thanks to the various restaurants, cinemas and casino that operate in the area.

2. Flacq Market

For a local experience check out Flacq, this is one of the most important villages in Mauritius, as it provides a meeting point for the inhabitants of the eastern part of the island.

Flacq is home to one of the largest open-air markets in the world, Mauritians and tourists flock here from all over the island to experience the colour and excitement of the market, as well as to sample some of the local specialties that are available.

Handicrafts, souvenirs and clothes are among the wide varieties of products that you can buy here.

3. Ile aux Cerfs

A short 15 minute boat ride from the village of Trou d’Eau Douce, in the east of Mauritius, the Ile aux Cerfs is a tiny and absolutely spectacular island surrounded by clear waters and idyllic white sandy beaches.

Though the area around the landing jetty can be quite busy with souvenir and food stalls, there are plenty of quiet and peaceful spots to be found including some of the most beautiful beaches you will likely ever see.

4. Grand Baie

Grand Baie is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mauritius. Located on the northern coast, this former fishing village has a wide range of shopping facilities, restaurants, bars, beaches and watersports.

From here, you can take a boat trip to some of the country’s northern islands, relax on the sandy beaches or enjoy some of the best food in Mauritius.

5. Black River Gorges

In the interior of Mauritius, you’ll find the Black River Gorges national park. Covering an area of 6,574 hectares, the park is the best place for spotting some of the nation’s finest examples of indigenous wildlife in pristine lush nature.

Though the Dodo may be long gone, you can still see parakeets, kestrels and the Mauritian flying fox. Crisscrossed by 60km of trails, the park makes a great day out and brings you face to face with some rather unique locals.

6. Grand Bassin

If you are more into nature and like to discover the wonders of nature, then you should pay a visit to Grand Bassin.

The area offers some wonderful scenery thanks to some lush vegetation growing in their natural habitat. Grand Bassin is actually the crater of a volcano which has now become dormant for quite some time.

One thing to note when visiting this place is that Grand Bassin is considered as a sacred lake by the Hindu Community living on the island.

A visit to the sacred Hindu temple complex based around Grand Bassin lake is highly recommended, just be sure that you respect religious belief of these people when visiting this place. For instance make sure that you dress properly when visiting the area, this isn’t the place to turn up in your bikini or swimming shorts.

7. SSR Botanical Garden

If you have a passion for nature another interesting place that you will want to visit on the island is the SSR Botanical Garden which is located in Pamplemousses. This is a big garden where you will be able to discover some plants that can only be found on the island of Mauritius.

There are also some other plants that have been brought in from all over the world and definitely contribute to the beauty of the place. Do not miss the giant water lilies which can be found in the various ponds scattered around the garden.
