Barman beer

Pubs are a British institution and going down the local to watch footie over a pint is one of the top ten things expats miss about home.

If you’re one of the many who think singing the national anthem around a mouthful of pork scratchings and beer is beyond your reach, think again.

Here’s our pick of the best British pubs in Spain.

1. The George and Dragon, Barcelona

• Carrer de la Diputació, 269

The George and Dragon was one of the first British pubs in Barcelona and is owned and run by an English family.

As well as serving Fuller’s London Pride, Dry Blackthorn Cider and other British bevies, this pub prides itself on producing authentic, good quality British food. Favourites include Steak and Ale Pie, Bangers and Mash and a Sunday Roast with all the trimmings.

It has become a popular haunt for both expat and local sports fans due to its big TV and projection screens, but The George and Dragon is just as suited to families.

2. O’Neill’s, Madrid

• Principle 12

O’Neill’s is a hugely popular Irish Bar in the Spanish capital. It also claims to be the largest homage to the Emerald Isle in Europe; O’Neill’s would-be-spacious two floors are jam packed with rustic Irish artefacts.

It’s known for its live music and special events like the ‘Night Exchange’ where expats and tourists from around the world gather to practice languages and make friends.

O’Neill’s serves an eclectic mix of food, blending house specials like the ‘Irish Breakfast’ with traditional British pub fare and dishes with a more global influence.

4. The Queen Vic, Barcelona
